Spark Toys Spartacus - Megatron

Spark Toys Spartacus - Megatron

I do wish that I had time to read the Transformer comics, but between family, work, and my various hobbies, I simply don't have the time. Despite that, I'm excited to get my hands on Spark Toys Spartacus. I loved their version of Optimus Prime, and Spartacus does not disappoint.

Tank mode is not the worst H-tank or armored vehicle I've seen. The paint application and line work provides much visual interest. The cannon on the left has about one click of articulation up and down. The small cannon on the right can swivel in its port. The center cannon does not move. The mine sweepers in front are on hinges. He has rubber treads that don't work all that well. The undercarriage is basically a robot performing a squat. His sword can store underneath, pegged into a rather unfortunate location.

Transformation between modes is not fun. You are going to scratch paint because the tolerances and clearances are too tight in some areas. In particular, the red and black panels that form the back of the tank can scratch the bottom of his backpack so use some extra care. There is some parts-forming involving the front of the tank that turns into his shield.

Like Alpha Pack, Spartacus did not skip gym day. He has a robust and beefy look to him that I really enjoy. I love all the paint applications and line work on his chest. The shiny metallic paint on his body gives him a more premium feel. While Alpha Pack seems stockier, Spartacus is bristling with weaponry. My only complaint is that he's a tad shorter than Alpha Pack.

His head is on a ball joint. He can look down more than he can look up. His shoulders are on ratcheted swivels and hinges that let him raise his arms out and up not quite 90 degrees. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His single-jointed elbows only curl 90 degrees. His thumbs are fixed and the rest of his fingers are single-pinned, with his pointing fingers articulating separately from the rest and having an extra knuckle each. He has an ab crunch that gives you one click. His hips are on ratcheted universals that allow him to perform a full side-splits, but not a full front splits. He has single-jointed knees that curl just shy of 90 degrees. His ankles have tilts and rockers. His toes are on hinges, but you don't get much waggle from them.

His accessories include two cannons and his over-the-shoulder cannon and a missile for it, a sword, a shield, and four faces in total. The fusion cannon for his arm could have been larger. It is simply black plastic with some line work and can peg onto either forearm. The smaller cannon is also black plastic and has the same kind of peg. The red missile goes with his shoulder cannon, which boasts a pretty powerful spring launcher. The sword has purple and metallic silver paint applications. The line work gives it an interesting design. The inner blade extends. It uses a Masterpiece-styled tab that works better than most but is finicky to place. The shield is the front of his tank and is covered in the same metallic silver paint as his body. It also has some gunmetal paint applications and detailed line work. It pegs onto the side of his forearms. The paint on the peg is going to rub off at some point. Two of the faces are probably inspired by the comics with the chin sculpt and the other two are more reminiscent of G1. They have expressions ranging from neutral to maniacal laughter. The face swapping mechanic is easy to use and does not require messing with screws.

Spartacus will be joining Alpha Pack on my War Within shelf. Even knowing nothing about the War Within series, I'm excited about this line of figures, especially if Spark Toys can make a hat trick with their upcoming Grimlock figure. There are some tolerance issues during transformation, but that's not enough to dampen my enjoyment of this figure.

Toyworld Spanner - Springer

Toyworld Spanner - Springer

After the somewhat disappointing Crank, I opened Toyworld Spanner with some trepidation. I never technically stopped collecting lines before - TFC Toys Old Soldiers series fizzled out before I could reject any new figures - but I was ready to stop should Spanner turn out be bad, especially since Springer is of such nostalgic importance for me. Fortunately, Spanner offers me just enough to stay vested in this series.

I'm sort of indifferent to his car mode. It's neither egregiously bad nor inspiringly awesome. The proportions just seem off to me. His tail section is a bit messy. I wish his rear wheels had been hidden because they look so awkwardly tiny. The rear fenders don't want to stay tabbed to the body and are constantly coming apart. His canopy opens to reveal a cockpit painted in metallic gunmetal that is also used on his thrusters. I wished he had more of that gunmetal instead of all that drab grey. The yellow panels in front also open to reveal blue transparent . . . headlights? weapons?

Transformation to helicopter mode is ridiculously easy. There is a bit of parts-forming with the rotor blade. It was extremely hard to peg in, at least not without causing the rest of the vehicle to splay apart. It also doesn't spin very well. From above, the helicopter looks alright. From underneath, the back of Spanner's head is clearly visible. The undercarriage panel doesn't really stay tabbed together very well. His side sections have no tabs at all. There are gaps throughout the form. Overall, the designs of the vehicle modes aren't making me itch to use either in a photo project.

Transformation to robot mode is not difficult. As expected, his rotor becomes his sword. Everything moves smoothly, except for a squeaky bicep swivel and one kneepad that keeps popping off its nubs. Returning to either vehicle mode is also simple and hassle free.

Robot mode is definitely where I enjoy this figure the most. His Die-cast chest is particularly nostalgic. Additional Die-cast in his shins give him some extra heft. His light-piping works really well. Despite being from a line of slightly oversized figures, Spanner is surprisingly short when compared to Unique Toys Allen. He also doesn't have that chunkiness of Allen. The asymmetrical line work on his chest is a bit off-putting, but at least there is a decent amount of it. I do wish he had more paint applications and was a little more stylized.

His head is on a hinge and swivel. He can look up, but not down. The hinge is extremely loose, causing his head to flop backward just from handling him and sometimes when he's just standing still. His shoulders are on swivels and double hinges that let him raise his arms to the sides 90 degrees despite his shoulder pylons. He has another set of outward hinges just above his elbows that allow him to raise his arms sideways without even moving his shoulders. He swivels at his biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His elbows are double-jointed and can curl just past 90 degrees. His thumbs are on ball joints and his fingers are single-pinned. Like Crank, his fingers articulate in pairs. His hips are on universals that can swivel quite a fair amount, but they feel rather loose. He can perform full front and side splits. His knees are ratcheted and technically double-jointed, but the lower joints only have room in the housing for one click. Comically, his knees can actually bend in the wrong direction slightly more than in the normal direction. He doesn't really have articulating feet. His toes are on ball joints. Unfortunately, his heel spurs sit ever so slightly higher than his toes, which causes him to have a slight lean and to have some trouble holding dynamic poses.

His accessories include a pair of rifles, his sword, an extra face, and some screw hole covers. The rifles are grey plastic with some line work and red paint applications. They slot into his fist and stay in place pretty securely. They can also mount in either vehicle modes. In robot mode, one can peg where the rotor blade would peg. His sword is grey plastic with some line work. It splits apart to form his rotor blade. Unfortunately, the top side is not aesthetically pleasing. The extra face has a snarl or a grimace; I can’t really tell. The screw hole covers go on the back portion of the vehicle and the side of the housing for the thruster.

Spanner will join his brethren on my Toyworld shelf. I'm glad that he is better designed than Crank. Robot mode is where I enjoy him the most. The other two modes are a fair bit of meh. He's definitely not G1; none of the Toyworld oversized figures really are. For me, that's just another reason to start a shelf with these guys. All in all, Spanner is quite a step up from Crank and keeps me interested in more from Toyworld.

Toyworld Crank - Kup

Toyworld Crank - Kup

I wasn't entirely onboard with Toyworld's rescale, but the aesthetic design and durability of their figures kept me coming back for more. Toyworld Crank is probably my least favorite of their offerings so far because he doesn't offer me either of those qualities.

Vehicle mode is rather uninspired, but that is probably more to do with Kup's design than the figure. It does look like the old G1 toy and the cartoon vehicle so I have no real complaints there. The canopy is not hinged, but it can be removed to apply an Autobot sticker. I'm not too fond about the color scheme, but there is transparent yellow plastic for the head and tail lights. I have one rear wheel that doesn't roll and another that always wants to collapse back into the wheel cavity.

Transformation back and forth between modes is pretty straightforward. It was pretty easy to line up what few tabs were required.

Overall, I like the shape of the figure. I just wished he was colored more like the box art. It's as if they had mistakenly reversed his paint scheme and mixed the wrong shade of teal. Dark grey plastic covers his face, arms, thighs, and feet. His crotch is teal instead of grey. I don't like either of his face sculpts. His light-piping does work very well at least.

His head is on a ball joint that has quite a wide range of motion. His shoulders are on swivels and hinges that let him raise his arms almost to near vertical. The hinges feel dangerously tight, but the swivels are ridiculously loose. His shoulder covers also sit very loosely. He has butterfly joints, but the floppiness isn't offset by the small range of motion they provide. He swivels at the biceps, wrists, waist, and thighs. His double-jointed elbows can almost perform full curls. His thumbs are on ball joints and his fingers are single-pinned, articulating in pairs. He has a bit of an ab crunch. His hips are on universal joints that allow him to achieve full front and side splits. His double-jointed knees can only curl to about 90 degrees. He suffers from the double-whammy of knees that bend in the reverse direction as well as joints at the top of his thighs that let him lift his legs without engaging his hips. It's very similar to what Primorion has. I really hate these two design choices. His ankles are on hinges and swivels that end at ball joints to his feet so there shouldn't be any issue putting his feet flat on the ground no matter the stance. He also has hinged heel spurs.

His accessories include his rifle, an alternate face, two cigars, a pair of screw covers, and a display base. His rifle has some decent line work and some gun metal paint applications. It simply slots into his fist and stays in place very well. In vehicle mode, whether designed to or not, the rifle can peg onto the back. One of the faces has a peg hole for the cigars, which are tiny things that will probably disappear at some point. The extremely dark paint on the included faces make him look like a zombie. The screw covers go on his back. Does making us apply the screw covers save that much time at the factory? The display base is similar to the ones that have come before.

Crank will go onto my Toyworld shelf, but somewhat begrudgingly. I usually enjoy Toyworld offerings, less for their accuracy to the character, but more for their durability and playability. I'm not really getting that from this figure, all due to those floppy shoulder joints. If Crank had been first in this line, I would have been hesitant to get more. I still have Spanner and Coolsville to look at so I hope Crank is just the exception in an enjoyable line so far.
